According to acupuncture theory, the body possesses a network of invisible pathways called Meridians that link together the entire body and organs. Throughout these Meridians flows a life force or ‘vital’ energy of the body (called Qi) that has different qualities and functions in different parts of the body. Along each Meridian there are many acupuncture points that have particular influences on the Qi of different organs and body parts.Once Qi becomes imbalanced, health deteriorates and illness appears. Acupuncture stimulates the points to restore the balance of the Qi and maintain health.
Mechanisms of acupuncture are still unclear. Multiple physiologic models have been proposed, which have implicated hormones (eg. cortisol and oxytocin), the immune system, and the autonomic and somatic nervous systems.

Safety and Side-Effect of Acupuncture
In a skilled hand, acupuncture in Ottawa is very safe. Needles we used are sterilized single use with good quality. When the needle is inserted into the skin, it may cause a little prick and when withdrawn, minor bleeding occasionally. To those who take anticoagulants or aspirin, the chance of bleeding may increase although careful manipulation is applied. Very rarely dizziness/discomfort could happen which may be caused by multiple factors such as special constitution, scared of needles, hunger etc.
